| A Scary E-mail - Protect yourself from Identity Theft |
|
How many times have you cleaned out the spam folder on your e-mail account? Probably a lot these days. Have you ever looked through your spam folder and took a look at what's going on in there? Where are e-mails coming from and the subject of the e-mail, things of that nature. Taking a little closer look you see that e-mail called something like this "John Doe, Capital One Checking Account is Closed".
Replace that John Doe with your name and you have a pretty sincere e-mail that seems like it's really from a reputable bank. Stop right there and don't even respond to the e-mail nor read the scammers non-sense. It might look real, but it's not.
I have been in this predicament before with seeing nothing but phishing e-mails. These phishing scammers are just trying to get a hold of your personal information in hope you give it up to them or open a malicious file under their e-mail which could then lead them to your personal information.
Now the next question is how do I really know it's a fake phishing e-mail? Take into consideration banks aren't dumb and won't send you an e-mail requesting personal information like bank account numbers and your social security number. Heres when you need to be careful and take not on this. If you do call the bank to check out to see if you really do have account problems. DON'T call any phone number that the e-mail supplies you. Pop open the phone book and get your banks actual number. Phishing scammers are getting that much more involved in these scams, they will set up fake phone lines and pretend they are the bank. They will pick up the phone like the bank, sound the same, but they aren't the same. They are the identity thieves.
Don't let identity theft happen to you. After you have realized the e-mail is a fake, what do you do with it? Deletion or ignoring the e-mail is obviously a good choice. Report it to authorities and you can even report the e-mail to the bank to let them know the procedures and styles of this changing movement of identity thieves. So in the future they can handle these situations better and maybe one day stop it.
