Don't be fooled with these phone calls. The IRS will not cold call you. If you do encounter a phone call like this, say goodbye and hang up the phone. Then get the reputable phone number for the IRS. Call them and see if the suspicious phone call was true.

Now another popular thing these identity thieves do, is send out fake e-mails impersonating tax agents. Whatever you do, no matter how convincing that e-mail looks and reads - It's FAKE! The e-mail will try to direct you to a form usually asking for personal information. Avoid and delete the e-mail. Do what was mentioned in the above paragraph. Call the IRS - Remember the IRS isn't going to send you e-mails.
